Ingredients needed
Here’s what you need to make these Greek turkey burgers:
- Lean ground turkey
- Egg
- Quick oats
- Greek seasoning (see below)
- Garlic cloves
- White onion
- Fresh dill or dried dill
- Salt and pepper
Here are the ingredients needed for the homemade Greek seasoning:
- Garlic powder
- Dried basil
- Dried oregano
- Dried parsley
Substitutions
If you don’t have some of the suggested ingredients or you would like to make some adjustments, here are a few of my recommended substitutions:
- Ground chicken or beef
- Instead of using ground turkey for this burger recipe, ground chicken or ground beef would also work.
- Old fashioned rolled oats
- These can be used in place of quick oats.
- Bread crumbs
- Bread crumbs will act very similarly to quick oats and can be used instead. They add some texture, soak up any extra liquid and make the meat go a little bit further.
- Store bought seasoning
- If you don’t want to make your own homemade Greek seasoning and prefer to use a store bought option, this is totally fine!
- Garlic salt
- If you only have garlic salt for the homemade seasoning, you can use this. Just slightly reduce the added salt to ¼ teaspoon when making the burgers so they aren’t too salty.
How to make homemade Greek seasoning
Start by making the Greek seasoning. Mix the garlic powder and all of the herbs together in a small bowl and set aside. This will make a larger amount than what is needed in the recipe, so save the leftovers in an airtight container for a double batch of burgers or other future recipes!
How to make Air Fryer Turkey Burgers
It’s time to make the Greek turkey burger patties!
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, egg, oats, garlic, onion, fresh dill, 1 tbsp of the homemade Greek seasoning, salt and pepper. Stir well.
- At this stage, I like to use disposable plastic gloves so I can form the burger patties using my hands but avoid getting them too dirty. Scoop roughly ¾ cup of the meat mixture into your hands and pat it back and forth until it forms a disk that is roughly ½ inch thick. Use your fingers to round the edges. Set this on a plate lined with parchment paper or tin foil and repeat with the remaining meat until it is all formed into patties.
Now we cook the burgers according to your desired method.
- Air Fryer
- Heat the air fryer to 400F. I recommend using olive oil or a cooking spray to lightly coat the bottom of the air fryer basket, just to be safe! Alternatively, you could use air fryer liners. Then add the hamburger patties, making sure they are evenly spaced out. You may have to cook the burgers in two rounds, depending on the size of your air fryer and how many burger patties you made.
- Cook them for 8-12 minutes in total, flipping halfway to ensure even cooking. You may want to use a meat thermometer to ensure the cooked burgers reach the recommended internal temperature of 165F or 74C.
- This is the air fryer that we currently use. It’s a 7-in-1 grill, air fryer, dehydrator and more.
Alternate cooking methods
- Stovetop
- To cook on the stovetop, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a deep set pan over medium-high heat.
- Place the burger patties on the pan for 4-6 minutes (or until golden brown on the cooked side) and flip. Cook again for another 4-6 minutes, or until the burger is fully cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165F or 74C.
- BBQ
- Lightly brush either the burgers or the grill grates with vegetable oil and place the patties on the barbeque at medium-high heat, roughly 375-400F. Grill for about 5 minutes and flip. Grill for another 5 minutes or until the burger is fully cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165F or 74C.
What to serve with Greek Air Fryer Turkey Burgers
There are countless ways that you could serve these Air Fryer Turkey Burgers. Let’s start with my favourite toppings:
- tzatziki (really sticking to the traditional Greek flavours)
- thinly sliced fresh tomato
- fresh romaine lettuce
You’re welcome to try any of these additional condiments and toppings as well:
- yellow mustard
- dijon mustard
- ketchup
- mayonnaise
- cheese (ex. Cheddar, marble, feta, etc.)
- arugula
- onions
- avocado or guacamole
- hot sauce or spicy mayo
- pickles
Now for the sides. If your goal is to make this a balanced meal, we already have the protein and carbohydrate source covered with the burger patty and the bun. We just need to add some extra fibre through veggies or a salad. Feel free to keep it super simple and serve fresh veggies with a dip like tzatziki (use it on the burger too!) or hummus.
You might prefer to make an easy leafy green salad dressed with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Or maybe you’re really leaning into the Greek theme with a Greek salad. Either of these options would be delicious!
If you’re looking for more side dish options, consider:
- sweet potato fries
- French fries
- coleslaw
- baked beans
- pickles
- potato salad
- bean salad
- grilled vegetables (or cook them in the air fryer!)
- onion rings
You could even chop up the cooked burgers and toss them on a bed of greens or rice with veggies for a balanced salad or bowl. Something new to try!
However you decide to serve it, I hope it’s a crowd-pleasing meal!
How to reheat turkey burgers
Since the burgers should already be cooked before they are cooled and refrigerated or frozen, we don’t want to cook them too much more when reheating them.
Using the stovetop, heat a pan on low-medium heat and add 1 teaspoon of oil. Once this is heated, add the burger patty and a splash (about 1 tbsp) of water to the pan. Cover the pan with a lid and cook/steam the burger for a few minutes, or until heated through. Be careful not to overcook the patty.
Although microwaves are a very quick and convenient tool for reheating, they can dry out and overheat the burger patty so be cautious when using.
Nutrition considerations
My goal is to encourage a more joyful, intuitive relationship with food, focusing on flavor and satisfaction rather than numbers. Because of this, I don’t normally calculate the calories of my recipes. Caloric amounts can also be inaccurate due to variations in ingredients and portions. However, I do like to highlight the beneficial nutrients that my recipes provide. This recipe makes about 4 burger patties. In each burger (without the bun) there is roughly:
- 30 grams of protein
- 1 gram of fibre
- A significant source of omega 3 fatty acids
- A variety of B vitamins, including vitamin B12 and niacin (vitamin B3)
- A variety of minerals such as iron, selenium, zinc and more!
Dietary preferences
As a dietitian, I aim to create recipes that can suit a variety of dietary considerations. This recipe is already dairy free and nut free.
- To make this recipe gluten free, opt for gluten-free quick oats and don’t forget to use a gluten-free burger bun!
FAQ
- Can you freeze the turkey burgers?
- Yes, you can absolutely freeze the turkey burgers. There are two ways to do this. First, if you’re freezing the burgers prior to cooking them. Place a piece of parchment paper in between each burger patty and put them all in a freezer bag. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. If you’re freezing them after they have been cooked, follow the same storage and thawing steps.
- How do you thaw frozen turkey burger patties?
- Once you’re ready to eat them, allow the frozen turkey burgers to thaw in the fridge overnight or in a large container filled with cold water.
- How do I store the cooked burgers?
- If you plan to eat them within 3 days after cooking, you can store the cooked burgers in an airtight container in the fridge. If you won’t get around to enjoying them for more than 5 days after they have been cooked, make sure they have properly cooled before transferring to an airtight container and placing in the fridge (if eating in a week) or freezer (if eating in the next 3 months).
- Can I make these burgers as a meal prep option?
- Of course! They make an excellent option for a protein source and can be used in many ways.
